About the Artistes

 

Smt. Sowmya is a disciple of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr.S. Ramanathan and Smt.T. Muktha and is also learning under her father, Dr.M. Srinivasan. Sowmya has received many titles and awards such as Isai Peroli, Sangeetha Kala Bharathi and Nada Bhushanam. She has won concert awards under various categories from the Music Academy Chennai, consecutively from 1986 till 2001. In addition to her many albums, Sowmya has co-produced the world's first CD ROM and VCD on Carnatic music with K.N.Shashikiran, and has given a video album on Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathi's compositions. She is a promoter of the popular music web portal, www.carnatica.com, and she is committed to promoting music on a global level.

 

R. K. Shriramkumar, grandson of veteran violinist ‘Sangita Kalaratna' Shri R.K. Venkatrama

Sastri, learnt initially under Smt Savitri Satyamurthy, later under his grandfather, and had advanced guidance from Professor VV Subramanyam.  He has also had training in vocal music from Sangita Kalanidhi Late Shri D.K. Jayaraman.  Shriramkumar has given many solo violin concerts and has accompanied doyens like Semmangudi, MS Subbulakshmi, DK Pattammal, DKJayaraman, T. Brinda, KV Narayanaswamy, TV Sankaranarayanan, TN Seshagopalan, Dr. N. Ramani, and Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. Shriramkumar has toured internationally in countries such as US and UK.   

 

Neyveli Narayanan was initiated by Sri. S.K. Ganesa Pillai and later honed his skills under late Thanjavur  Sri Upendran of the Thanjavur style. Narayanan is currently a disciple of Padmashri Umayalpuram Sri K. Sivaraman. Narayanan has accompanied veterans such as Madurai T.N. Seshagopalan, T.V. Sankaranarayanan, T.R. Subramanian, K.V. Narayanaswamy, Mandolin Srinivas, Ravikiran and N. Ramani. He has performed in leading sabhas in India, has toured internationally and has participated in many national and international festivals like the Festival of Asia (London), National Arts Council (Singapore). He is an AIR graded artiste and is the recipient of awards such as  "Best Mridangam Player" (1995, 1997-98) by the Music Academy. 

 

Directions to Hickman Hall:

 

From NJ Turnpike:  Take exit 9 off NJ Turnpike. After the toll booth, bear to the right; follow signs for “Route 18 North – New Brunswick”. Proceed on Route 18 North and after the first traffic light, take the exit marked “George Street “ and “Cook/Douglass Campus only”. The exit ramp becomes George Street at the Douglass Campus. On George Street, bear to the right just before the first traffic light. Hickman Hall is the first building on your left.

 

From Route 287 (North or South):  Take exit 9 for “River Road, Bound Brook, Highland Park”. Proceed east on River Road towards Highland Park until you reach the fifth traffic light (about 3.4 miles). Turn right at the River Road traffic light onto Route 18 South and cross the bridge over the Raritan River. At the first traffic light make a right onto Commercial Avenue. Proceed to the first traffic light and make a left onto George Street. You are now about to enter the Douglass Campus. Proceed on George Street to the second light. Turn right at the second light and take the jug handle across George Street. Hickman Hall is on your left.
