About the Artistes
T. V. Sankaranarayanan began learning under uncle and mentor, the legendary
Madurai Mani Iyer and began accompanying father Sri T. S. Vembu Iyer from the
age of fifteen. TVS, as he is popularly and affectionately known, has performed
solo since 1968 and has toured widely in the UK, USA, Canada, East Asia,
Australia. He has been awarded many awards and titles, the prominent ones being
‘Sangeet Natak Academy Award’ in 1990, ‘Yogam Nagaswamy Award’ of the
prestigious Chennai Music Academy – 1986 and 2002, ‘Gandharva Gana Mani’ by
Kanchi Acharya. Sri Sankaranarayanan gave the inaugural concert for CMANA way
back in 1976 and also performed in the Silver Jubilee of CMANA in May 2001.
Delhi Sunderarajan is a disciple of Sangeetha Bhushanam Sri. V.
Janakiraman and made his debut at the age of eight and was recognized as a
child prodigy. Sunderrajan has
performed solo concerts and has accompanied many distinguished musicians. He is
an AIR graded artiste since the age of thirteen (got an age exemption for
this!) and has performed in AIR festivals like the Sangeetha Sammelan. . He has
numerous titles and awards such as ‘Nadha Brahma Kala Rathnam’ and has the rare
distinction of winning the Chennai Music Academy’s ‘best accompanying
violinist’ award for three years in succession.
Thiruvarur Bhakthavatsalam was born in a family of traditional musicians and
received his training from his uncle and noted mrudanga vidwan Sri Tiruvarur
Krishnamurthy and from his mother Smt. T. R. Anandavalli. He started performing
at the age of nine and has toured widely, including US, Australia, the Festival
of Indian Music in the UK, Music Festival during the 1992 Olympics in
Barcelona, Spain. Bhakthavatsalam has accompanied many leading artistes of
Carnatic music and has also played many jugalbandhi concerts. He is the
recipient of many awards and titles including “Mrudanga Vadhya Mani’ by Kanchi
Mutt, ‘Kalaimamani’ by Tamil Nadu Government, etc.
Directions to Hickman Hall:
From
NJ Turnpike: Take exit 9 off NJ Turnpike. After the toll
booth, bear to the right; follow signs for “Route 18 North – New Brunswick”.
Proceed on Route 18 North and after the first traffic light, take the exit
marked “George Street “ and “Cook/Douglass Campus only”. The exit ramp becomes
George Street at the Douglass Campus. On George Street, bear to the right just
before the first traffic light. Hickman Hall is the first building on your
left.
From
Route 287 (North or South): Take exit 9 for “River Road,
Bound Brook, Highland Park”. Proceed east on River Road towards Highland Park
until you reach the fifth traffic light (about 3.4 miles). Turn right at the
River Road traffic light onto Route 18 South and cross the bridge over the
Raritan River. At the first traffic light make a right onto Commercial Avenue.
Proceed to the first traffic light and make a left onto George Street. You are
now about to enter the Douglass Campus. Proceed on George Street to the second
light. Turn right at the second light and take the jug handle across George
Street. Hickman Hall is on your left.
