Introduction

CARNATIC MUSIC ASSOCIATION OF NORTH AMERICA (CMANA)

Synopsis:

Carnatic Music Association of North America (CMANA), established in 1976, is a tax-exempt non-profit cultural organization (Tax ID: 11-2654179) registered in New York and New Jersey. For nearly five decades, CMANA has served as one of the leading institutions dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and global propagation of Carnatic music, the classical music tradition of South India.

CMANAʼs mission is to serve as a cultural bridge, fostering the learning, understanding, performance, and appreciation of Carnatic music and related fine arts across North America. Ыrough its programs and initiatives, the organization has successfully engaged a multicultural and multi-generational community of musicians, students, teachers, scholars, and rasikas from both the Indian diaspora and the broader American cultural landscape.

Over the years, CMANA has hosted and collaborated with many of the most eminent musicians, scholars, ethnomusicologists, and cultural leaders in the field of Indian classical music. Its Honor Roll of Patrons reflects a distinguished group of artists and connoisseurs who have supported CMANAʼs efforts to nurture and sustain this timeless art form outside its traditional homeland.

CMANA’S ACTIVITIES FOCUS ON THREE KEY STRATEGIC PILLARS:

  1. Concert Performance – presenting leading artists through festivals, concert tours, and major cultural events across North America.

  2. Music Education – encouraging learning and scholarship in Carnatic music through workshops, competitions, lecture demonstrations, panel discussions and educational initiatives

  3. Youth Development – inspiring the next generation through youth participation, mentorship, and programs that cultivate appreciation for Indian classical arts

Through nearly fifty years of sustained effort, CMANA has played a pioneering role in building a vibrant ecosystem for Carnatic music in North America, helping to connect artists, educators, and audiences while preserving one of Indiaʼs most treasured cultural traditions for future generations..

One of CMANAʼs central contributions to the cultural landscape of North America is its concert performance platform, through which the organization regularly arranges artist tours featuring internationally acclaimed musicians as well as accomplished artists residing in North America. These tours are highly valued by performing artists and cherished by music lovers across the United States and Canada. The distinguished list of musicians who have toured under CMANAʼs banner reads like a “whoʼs who” of the Carnatic music world, underscoring the associationʼs reputation as a premier presenter of Indian classical music outside India. In addition to full concert tours, CMANA organizes individual performances across a variety of musical genres, including :
  • Carnatic Vocal Concerts
  • Carnatic Instrumental Concerts
  • Hindustani Classical Vocal Performances
  • Jugalbandhi (collaborative performances between musical traditions)
  • Lecture Demonstrations (Lec-Dems) that deepen scholarly and musical understanding

CMANA also provides a valuable platform for U.S.-based musicians and teachers, enabling them to present their work and connect with wider audiences. Signature programs such as Teachers Appreciation Day recognize the contributions of music educators who play a critical role in sustaining the tradition.

Another major initiative is the C3 Festival held during Labor Day weekend, which brings together Competitions, Concerts, and Conferences, and the National Carnatic Artistes Festival, offering a forum for performers, scholars, and music enthusiasts to exchange ideas and celebrate artistic excellence.

CMANA has consistently remained at the forefront of technology by digitizing most of its archives and making them accessible through a dedicated music app available on both the iOS and Android stores. The organization continues to enhance its front-end user interface to improve the overall listening and browsing experience. Its website was recently redesigned to incorporate modern technologies, with particular emphasis on user interaction and accessibility. Concert tickets are available for purchase through both the website and the mobile app.

MUSIC EDUCATION AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE

Education and knowledge sharing remain central to CMANAʼs mission. The association promotes learning and advancement in Carnatic music by maintaining a directory of qualified music teachers and organizing educational programs designed to nurture both aspiring musicians and informed listeners.

A flagship educational initiative is the Great Composer Day (GCD) youth competition, which celebrates the works of the great composers of Carnatic music. Participants are evaluated by senior performing artists and expert panels, and winners receive valuable feedback and recognition. Senior prize winners are often provided multiple opportunities to perform in junior concert platforms, helping them develop stage experience and artistic confidence.

CMANA also emphasizes collaboration with grassroots arts organizations and institutions of higher learning, fostering the exchange of knowledge between performing artists, scholars, educators, and students. These collaborations help strengthen the academic and artistic foundations of Carnatic music in North America. In addition, CMANA supports international cultural exchange by auditioning and facilitating performance opportunities for US qualified artists at prestigious venues in India, including

  • Narada Gana Sabha, Chennai (August performances)
  • Narada Gana Sabha December Music Festival

CMANA also proudly serves as a sponsor and incubator of the Global Carnatic Musicians Association, providing ongoing support to emerging artists and fostering global collaboration in Carnatic music performance. Youth Development and Community Engagement

CMANA places strong emphasis on youth development, recognizing that the future of Carnatic music depends on nurturing the next generation of musicians and cultural leaders. To encourage youth engagement, CMANA:

  • Provides free concert admission for all Junior Members
  • Offers volunteering opportunities and leadership roles within the organization
  • Issues community service certificates recognizing youth participation in organizing and supporting events

Through these initiatives, CMANA fosters a sense of community involvement, cultural identity, and artistic commitment among young participants.

Over the years, many CMANA Junior Members have grown into professional musicians, dancers, music teachers, ethnomusicologists, sound engineers, and arts administrators, reflecting the long-term impact of the organizationʼs youth programs.

SUPPORT FOR ARTISTS AND CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS

CMANA has also actively supported the broader Carnatic music ecosystem through fundraising efforts and endowment initiatives. The association has established endowment prizes that promote emerging talent at several prestigious institutions in India, including:

  • The Music Academy, Chennai
  • Narada Gana Sabha, Chennai
  • Percussive Arts Center, Bengaluru

These endowments help recognize young artists and encourage excellence within the global Carnatic music community.

GOVERNANCE AND ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

CMANA operates as a member-supported, volunteer-driven organization. Its activities are primarily funded through:

  • Membership dues
  • Individual donations
  • Corporate matching grants from donorsʼ employers

The organization is governed by a democratically elected Board, consisting of:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Board of Trustees

These office bearers serve CMANA as volunteers, contributing their time and expertise while maintaining successful professional careers in their respective fields.

Financial oversight is provided by a Financial Oversight Committee, ensuring transparency and accountability in the associationʼs operations. As part of CMANAʼs commitment to openness, financial statements and annual budget plans are presented and made available to all members of record.

CONTINUING THE LEGACY

For nearly five decades, CMANA has played a pioneering role in building and sustaining a vibrant ecosystem for Carnatic music in North America. By presenting world-class concerts, nurturing young talent, fostering education, and supporting cultural institutions both in North America and India, CMANA continues to strengthen the global presence of this timeless art form

As the organization celebrates its Golden Jubilee, CMANA remains committed to preserving Indiaʼs rich musical heritage while inspiring future generations of artists and audiences across the world.
